Social Media Presence

Many would argue that 2017 was the year of BTS, the 7 membered Korean boy group that took the world by storm, their domain being mainly on Twitter, where all 7 share one account. With close to 11 million followers (and being the most followed Korean account ever) the members often post close and personal selfies, with silly and casual captions, creating the image of any normal group of young adults.

One look at their account (@BTS_twt) will have you noticing that they’re much like any group of young adults - from videos of their pets, to selfies (called in Korea as ‘selca’ (sel = self, ca = camera)), it looks normal, which is what they want you to think about them. Take this tweet for example, that Jimin took when they were in LA for the AMAs. They’re just cute pictures he took during his stay in a foreign country, like any other tourist, even going so far to pair it with the caption “I’ve taken pictures” in a cute, casual tone. But if you were to look closer, you can see it - from his perfectly styled hair, to his flawless skin, even if they were going to film something, he isn’t just any normal person - he’s a celebrity. But (at least, according to their Twitter persona) he’s still like all of us, right?

Moving onto the second example, which is another group of photos of all of them in LA. The caption reads “LA by JK” which points to Jungkook, the youngest of the group (and the lover of photography, next to the second youngest, V) probably having taken the pictures of his members, clearly showing, RM, V, and J-Hope out on the streets of LA, once again, like any other tourist. This can also show how they’re like any other young adults, walking the streets of LA, and enjoying (what is the closest thing to) their vacation, taking pictures in spots they deem interesting to remember and upload to their social media.

Finally, the last example comes from second oldest, and rapper, Suga, who uploaded a picture of himself and his dog, Holly, from when they were given a week break, and he went back to his hometown to visit his family. He only tagged the photo with the hashtags #BTSLovemyself (which relates to both the title of their recent album, Love Yourself: Her, and their collaboration project with Unicef, called Love Myself), as well as the hashtags #BTS, and #방탄소년단, which is just BTS in Korean. His post makes him seem very normal, just a guy posting a picture of his pet - he’s even in sweats, with little to no makeup, much like any other person

BTS are known for their songs that reach out specifically to young adults, people their age and younger. Yet unlike many celebrities, they try to make themselves seem just like any other person, to try to make themselves easier to relate to. BTS often reveal all their flaws and insecurities to the world, instead of covering them up, to tell their fans and others that they’ve gone through everything that we have. They aren’t special, they aren’t super human, and they certainly are far from perfect. They’re just a group of talented young adults who want to help others who might be in the same positions of hopelessness they used to be in.
